Test Maturity Model

What is a test maturity model?

A test maturity model helps organizations evaluate and improve their testing practices. It's a structured framework that shows teams where they are now and what steps they need to take to get better at testing.

Do you have any examples of test maturity models?

The Test Maturity Model Integration (TMMi) is the industry's leading test process improvement model. It sets out five clear levels of testing capability:
  1. Initial: Testing is unplanned and reactive
  2. Managed: Basic test planning exists
  3. Defined: Standard testing processes are in place
  4. Measured: Teams track and improve testing with metrics
  5. Optimized: Testing processes are continuously refined

Why is a test maturity model important?

Test maturity models help teams identify gaps in their testing process and make targeted improvements. They provide clear benchmarks for progress and help align testing efforts with business goals, ultimately leading to better software quality.

What are the challenges with test maturity models?

Moving up maturity levels takes significant time and resources. Teams often resist changing established practices, and management may question the investment needed. Success requires strong leadership support and a realistic, step-by-step implementation plan.
